Bank of Thailand to Issue New Polymer Banknote

The Bank of Thailand is scheduled to issue the new 20-baht polymer banknote on 24 March 2022 through the branches of all banks, according to Governor of the Bank of Thailand Dr. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput.

The initiative to change the 20-baht banknote from paper to polymer is to improve the quality, making it cleaner and more durable. As the 20-baht banknote is the most widely used denomination, it is therefore prone to being more worn out and soiled than other denominations.

The advantage of polymer over paper is that it does not absorb moisture and dirt. Therefore, polymer banknotes can last significantly longer than paper banknotes.

The durability of polymer banknotes can thus reduce the need to print new notes to replace the damaged ones over the long term. That is also better for the environment. The transition from paper to polymer banknotes is, therefore, in line with the overall sustainability policy of the Bank of Thailand.

The 20-baht polymer banknote keeps the same theme of design and features as the current 20-baht paper banknote in circulation. Advanced anti-counterfeit technologies are used to ensure that the new polymer banknote is difficult to counterfeit, similar to the current banknote.

The additional security feature is the “clear windows,” which can be seen through from both sides. The lower clear window exhibits color-shifting from translucent yellow to red.

For the visually impaired, an added feature is the small numeric “20” embossed in the upper clear window, which can be easily touched and felt.

The 20-baht paper banknote will remain legal tender.
