Chiang Mai Drowns in Toxic Dust, Air Quality Ranked 7th Worst in the World

Chiang Mai: This week, Chiang Mai residents have been facing toxic dust that has once again covered the city. This morning (March 18, 2015), it was ranked as the 7th most polluted city in the world.

According to Thai News Agency, Chiang Mai has been drowning in toxic dust for several days. Locals report experiencing a burning sensation in their eyes, noses, and increased coughing, particularly among those with allergies and vulnerable groups. The highest dust levels were measured at 9:00 a.m. at Ban Pang Fueang School, reaching 263 micrograms per cubic meter. Meanwhile, a report from the IQ Air website at 10:00 a.m. ranked the world’s most polluted major cities, and found that Chiang Mai rose to 7th place.

Chiang Mai Province announced the PM 2.5 situation today. The overall picture is red, exceeding the standard value that affects the health of the people. The dust value is highest in Chiang Dao District. The main cause is forest fires in steep areas that are difficult to extinguish. In addition, the wind blows toxic dust and smoke from neighboring countries into Chiang Mai City. It is expected that this situation will continue until Songkran.

Lung and respiratory specialists warn the public, especially those at risk, to wear masks that can protect against PM2.5, close doors and windows tightly, avoid outdoor activities or going outside the house, and urge everyone to take care of their health during the toxic dust situation.
