Bangkok: DE discusses with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, NBTC, and operators to improve emergency warnings. Mr. Prasert Chantarawongthong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DE), chaired a joint discussion meeting with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Ministry of Interior, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), and telecommunications network service providers to resolve errors in the earthquake warning system.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Prasert stated that the meeting focused on improving the process of sending emergency situation warnings via SMS, following the directive of Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra. The aim is to ensure that SMS warning messages are delivered to the public faster, timely, and comprehensively, in line with public demands. The agreed steps include immediate analysis and dissemination of disaster warnings by the DDPM through the National Disaster Warning Center to the NBTC, which will then instruct operators to send SMS alerts to people in affected areas.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has also developed a communication action plan to inform the public of the initial disaster situation, appropriate responses, and a summary once the situation is resolved. The NBTC, along with other relevant units, will work on increasing the frequency of news updates, expediting the operation of the warning system, and ensuring that SMS alerts reach individuals in target areas affected by natural disasters and emergencies. This will be achieved through close coordination and timely public relations efforts via broadcast media.
