Bangkok: Heavy rainfall has sparked significant traffic congestion in Bangkok, prompting Mr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, deputy leader and MP of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, to urge Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and the traffic police to implement a response plan. The flooding on the Bangna-Trat Road, stretching over 31 kilometers, has become a crisis, causing distress among the city’s residents.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanakorn highlighted that the onset of the rainy season, particularly the heavy rain on May 16, led to extensive flooding across Bangkok. Bangna-Trat Road experienced prolonged flooding and slow drainage, resulting in traffic congestion that expanded over 31 kilometers. The situation has led to a doubling of travel time, with commuters reporting delays from one hour to three to four hours. Complaints have been filed with officials and media outlets like JS100 and JS91.
Mr. Thanakorn has called on Governor Chadchart to outline the city’s plan for managing the influx of rainwater. This includes preparations such as dredging canals, maintaining drainage systems, and utilizing water pumps and diversion equipment for the Chao Phraya River and the sea. He emphasized the need for coordination between the Bangkok Governor and government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior and traffic police, to swiftly address and alleviate the flooding and traffic issues.
Mr. Thanakorn stated, “I would like to ask Governor Chadchart to reveal the plan to prepare for the flooding situation, severe traffic congestion, and how to help the people. Because of the situation in the past week, road users on various routes, especially Bangna-Trat, have been severely affected. I would like to ask you to integrate relevant agencies and equipment and mobilize all units to solve the problem in a tangible way to alleviate the suffering of the people as quickly as possible. I would like you to reveal the plan that has been prepared to cope with the rainy season to build confidence for the people of Bangkok.”
