Pollution Control Department Backs Mae Kha Canal Restoration for Loi Krathong

Chiang mai: The Pollution Control Department is actively supporting the restoration of Mae Kha Canal in Chiang Mai Province in preparation for Loi Krathong 2025, following concerns about pollution and water deterioration. They are prioritizing efforts to dredge and install wastewater collection pipes to enhance drainage capacity.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surin Worakithamrong, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, highlighted the growing social media discourse regarding the canal’s transformation. Once a clean and popular tourist attraction, the Mae Kha Canal on Rakang Road, Hai Ya Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, has become a source of grey wastewater with a foul odor and visible garbage, adversely affecting the image of Chiang Mai Province.

The Pollution Control Department has tasked the Office of Environmental and Pollution Control 1 (Chiang Mai) with inspecting the area near Rakang Bridge. Their findings revealed the presence of dark-colored water with a mild odor and significant debris. Field tests indicated a dissolved oxygen level of 2.01 milligrams per liter, a pH of 7.20, and an electrical conductivity of 215 microsiemens per centimeter, classifying the water as “deteriorated.”

Mr. Surin has coordinated efforts with Chiang Mai Municipality to accelerate the rehabilitation of Mae Kha Canal in its third phase. This phase involves dredging the canal along Mahidol Road to improve water drainage efficiency and mitigate flooding. Additionally, a wastewater collection system will be implemented to treat water before it reenters the canal.

Chiang Mai Municipality is set to collaborate with relevant agencies to expedite water quality improvements in time for the Loi Krathong Festival in 2025, a period that attracts numerous Thai and international tourists to Chiang Mai.
