Bangkok: Thailand is advancing plans to host a “Formula 1 Formula One” race, following significant discussions between the country’s leadership and Formula One Group executives. The move comes as part of a broader strategy to position Thailand as a premier destination for global sporting events, with the potential to draw motorsport fans from around the world.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Stefano Domenicali, chairman of the board of directors of Formula One Group, recently met with Thailand’s Prime Minister, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, along with key governmental figures including Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, deputy prime minister and minister of transport, and Mr. Surawong Thienthong, minister of tourism and sports. The Prime Minister expressed the government’s eagerness to explore the feasibility of hosting a Formula One race, building on discussions initiated with former Prime Minister Mr. Settha Thavisin in 2024. This initiative aligns with government goals to elevate Thailand’s status as a venue for world-class events, recognizing the significant economic and tourism benefits such an event could bring.
Mr. Domenicali highlighted that an F1 race in Thailand presents economic and tourism opportunities, given the country’s existing motorsport fan base and renowned racers. He noted that hosting an F1 event could encourage extended tourist visits, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Thai culture, supported by the country’s robust infrastructure. The Formula One Group is committed to collaborating with Thai authorities to ensure a successful and memorable event for global motorsport fans.
Both parties agreed to proceed with a detailed examination of potential race locations, investment requirements, and overall feasibility. The Prime Minister has tasked relevant agencies with conducting comprehensive studies to assess these factors, ensuring a well-prepared bid to host the F1 race.
The Formula One Group Chairman emphasized the importance of integrating local culture into the event, which aligns with F1’s strategy of showcasing diverse cultural elements at each racetrack. He pointed out that F1 continues to expand its audience, now consisting of 1.61 million spectators with diverse demographics. The focus remains on maintaining high safety standards and delivering an exceptional experience that unites people globally. The Prime Minister concurred, emphasizing public engagement and raising awareness about the benefits of hosting the race to generate interest in motorsport.
