Sa kaeo: The 1st Army Area Command has instructed Cambodian villagers to cease their agricultural activities in a territory claimed by Thailand along the Thai-Cambodian border. This directive comes after negotiations facilitated by the Eastern Command with Cambodian villagers and military personnel, emphasizing the protection of national sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, the situation was brought to light when the 1st Army Area Operations Center received a report from the Burapha Task Force on May 16, 2026. It was noted that Cambodian nationals were seen using tractors to prepare farmland between Border Patrol Police Zones 42 and 44, specifically in Ang Sila Village, Non Mak Mun Subdistrict, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province. The 12th Ranger Control Unit, upon investigation, discovered Cambodian villagers engaging in agricultural activities beyond the designated red line, which encroaches on Thai territory. Cambodian military presence was also noted in the area.
In response, the 12th Ranger Regiment deployed rangers to negotiate with the Cambodian soldiers. Utilizing GPS coordinates, they highlighted the violation of MOU 43 by the Cambodian villagers, who had crossed into the disputed territory. The activities were clearly beyond the red line, indicating an encroachment on Thailand's sovereign territory. Consequently, a request was coordinated for halting all operations in the disputed areas and reporting the findings to the commanders of both nations.
Initial negotiations yielded an agreement from the Cambodian side to suspend agricultural activities in the contested plots until an official agreement on the international border is reached. Additionally, efforts will be made to explain the situation to Thai villagers affected by these developments and to coordinate with border control officers.
The area has been surveyed in preparation for the border demarcation process. The 1st Army Area, particularly the Eastern Command, remains steadfast in its mission to uphold Thai sovereignty and protect its territory along the Thai-Cambodian border comprehensively. The command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national interests and ensuring the safety of citizens residing near the border.
