SAN DIEGO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / February 29, 2024 / General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) flew the XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) for the first time on Feb. 28, 2024. OBSS is an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) program and GA-ASI was selected in 2021 to design, build and fly the new aircraft.

With flight of the AFRL-funded XQ-67A, GA-ASI has validated the "genus/species" concept first developed with AFRL as part of the Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Platform Sharing (LCAAPS) program focused on building several aircraft variants from a common core chassis.

Under LCAAPS, AFRL and GA-ASI explored the development of a chassis, termed a "genus", as the foundational core architecture from which several "species" of aircraft can be built.

"This provides an alternative acquisition approach for military aircraft that enables faster development, lower costs and more opportunities for frequent technology refresh," said Trenton White, OBSS Program Manager and aerospace engineer in AFRL’s Aerospace Systems Directorate. "XQ-67A is the first ‘species’ to be designed and built from this shared platform. Flight demonstration of this system is a major first step toward showing the ability to produce affordable combat mass."

"OBSS is the first aircraft type built and flown using a common core chassis developed by GA-ASI that promotes commonality across multiple vehicle types," said GA-ASI Vice President of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood.

CAPAS: Jamesray Mishael Ajido ruled the boys’ 12-14 100m butterfly event on Wednesday night to give the host Philippines its first gold medal in the 11th Asian Age Group Championships at the New Clark City Aquatics Center here.

The 15-year-old clocked 55.98 to erase the meet record of 56.36 set by Chinese Wang Yu Xiang in 2019.

Japan’s Yusei Nishiono also had a record-breaking performance of 56.05 to pocket the silver medal while Chinese Taipei’s Yung-Cheng Kan settled for the bronze medal in 56.79.

“I was expecting to win a medal, but I’m not sure what color. I’m happy that I won the gold,” Ajido said after pocketing his second medal in the tournament organized by the Philippine Aquatics, Inc. headed by Miko Vargas.

Ajido, a Grade 8 student at the La Salle Greenhills, bagged the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle, with a time of 24.34 – a personal best and a national record – last Tuesday.

Japan’s Toya Hirata captured the gold medal in 23.21, a new meet record that broke the 24.03 time set by compatriot
Yuga Takashima in 2019.

‘This is special for me. I am proud to win a medal for the Philippines. I dedicate my victory to the Lord and my family,’ he said after claiming his first medal.

Ajido had a fruitful campaign in local and international tournaments last year, grabbing two silvers at the SEA Age Group Championships in Indonesia.

He won the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke gold medals in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 and hauled five gold and one bronze medals at the Batang Pinoy National Championships.

PH bids to host FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025

MANILA: The Philippines on Thursday formalized its bid to host the prestigious FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025 where 31 of the world’s best nations plus the country’s national team will showcase elite action in the sport from Sept. 12 to 28.

‘As they say, teamwork makes the dream work and this meeting is a first major step towards the dream of a successful bid and eventual hosting of the men’s world championship,’ Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) president Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara said during the Special Briefing of the Philippines Bid to Host the FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025 at the Grand Hyatt Manila at the BGC in Taguig City.

Present at the special meeting were staunch sports and volleyball advocate Senator Pia Cayetano, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, and FIVB brass Volleyball World CEO Finn Taylor and Chief Business Officer Guido Betti.

The Philippine bid rides the heels of the PNVF’s successful staging of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which t
he top FIVB officials praised as the best-hosted editions – 2022 and 2023 – with an enormous local fan reaction never seen elsewhere in the world.

‘The VNL last year at the MOA (Mall of Asia) Arena was the best event of the VNL and we had 14 stops around the world,’ Taylor said. ‘It shows that the Philippines has embraced the best of volleyball and we were able to see that not only the fans embraced the players but teams embraced the fans. They can’t wait to come back.’

‘We see a massive potential in the Philippines. We decided to bring the VNL here two years ago and the fandom was crazy. We’re overwhelmed and with that being said, players will be happy to come back,’ Betti said. ‘Love from the people here was unique that all the volleyball players are dreaming for.’

The PNVF hosted two weeks – men and women – of the VNL at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in 2022 and a men’s leg at the SM Mall of Asia Arena last year.

Both major venues are again eyed for next year’s world championship.

Also gracing the occasi
on were Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann, Philippine Olympic Committee secretary general Warton Chan who represented president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino, Jennifer Reyes and Monica Mitra representing Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Erwin Lozano representing Senator Sonny Angara, and Sienna Olaso, vice president for Channels and Content at Cignal TV, Inc.

Representatives of the MOA Arena; United Promotions, Inc. of the Araneta Group Management; and the Tourism Promotions Board also attended the meeting.

‘I’m here to support and express the commitment of our government, specifically the DOT (Department of Tourism), to ensure that the Philippines’ bid to host this global event is likely successful,’ Frasco said.

Cayetano gamely shared her experiences as a former varsity and national volleyball player as she committed Taguig City and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s support for the country’s hosting of the world championship.

‘I assure that the Senate will do everything in its power for this e
vent. We’ve come a long way and we’re so excited to be part of this journey,’ she said. ‘We know that 2025 is a year that will bring much pride to the Philippines and share the love the Filipinos have.’

The Philippines has not been to the men’s world championship since the 1974 edition in Mexico.

The FIVB and Volleyball World will make a formal announcement of the successful bid by the end of March.
