Petrochemical Industry Group Drives Sustainable Plastic Waste Management Initiative

Bangkok: The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)'s "Petrochemical Industry Group" has unveiled a strategic plan to establish a standardized plastic waste return system aimed at recycling and transforming waste into new generation raw materials. This initiative seeks to support S-curve target industries and involves collaboration across various sectors, including government, private enterprises, communities, and the public, to enhance the cycle of plastic use through comprehensive understanding and engagement.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Apichai Charoensuk, Chairman of the Petrochemical Industry Club of the FTI, stated that the club, which includes 28 regular members of the Federation of Thai Industries, is set to partner with the PPP Plastics Association. This collaboration aims to implement sustainable plastic and waste management practices based on Circular Economy principles. The group's efforts align with Thailand's national roadmap for plastic waste management, aiming to reduce plastic waste volume and boost the nation's capacity to develop upstream industries for new S-curve targets. These targets focus on low-carbon national development to combat global warming and preserve biodiversity. The initiative is expected to add value to Thailand's economy and enhance its competitiveness in global trade.

The project emphasizes the development of environmentally friendly products throughout the waste management process, utilizing recycling technology and innovation. The goal is to produce high-quality recycled plastic pellets that are safe and efficient. The system for managing plastic waste is being enhanced, with the involvement of all sectors to promote comprehensive plastic production and use, ultimately improving quality of life from both an economic and environmental perspective.

Mr. Apichai highlighted the significant role of petrochemicals as an upstream industry, stating, "Petrochemicals add 10-25 times to the country's value from natural raw materials, with a total value chain exceeding 2.4 trillion baht, accounting for approximately 13% of GDP as of 2023." He noted that exports in this sector reach nearly 500 billion baht, or about 5% of total exports, creating over 400,000 jobs and supporting more than 3,000 SMEs. He also mentioned Thailand's commitment to the UN's World Environment Day 2025 theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution: Ending Global Plastic Pollution: Using Plastics Wisely, Transforming Thailand into a Sustainable Country."

Industry groups have been working together within the PPP Plastics network since 2018, focusing on managing plastic waste through circular economy principles and advocating for environmentally friendly products. The private sector has invested in developing technologies and innovations to produce high-quality recycled plastic pellets. These efforts anticipate the forthcoming Sustainable Packaging Management Act. Thailand has shown progress in reducing marine plastic waste, improving its global ranking from 6th in 2010 to 10th in 2021.
