Government Confirms Loy Krathong Festival Will Continue with Adjustments

Bangkok: The government has confirmed it will not ban the traditional Loy Krathong festival and is asking for cooperation in adjusting the format and reducing festivities to show respect for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ayrin Ponthurith, Deputy Government Spokesperson, revealed that Wednesday, November 5, 2025, falls on the Loi Krathong festival, a significant Thai tradition that has been held for a long time. The purpose of the festival is to preserve and promote the traditions, culture, and way of life of communities connected to water, ensuring their continued survival. This year, various areas across Thailand will continue to hold Loi Krathong festivities, but with less festive activities such as musical performances and light and sound shows, instead focusing on events that preserve and maintain Thai traditions within boundaries, to show respect for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.

In addition, the government and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) have adapted the format of the "Vichitra Chao Phraya 2025" performance to promote tourism. The event, scheduled for November 9th to December 23rd, 2025, is themed "Light of Siam, Mother of the Land." This commemoration of the great royal deeds will feature fireworks displays replaced with drone displays expressing mourning and honoring the late King. The lighting and colors will be more subdued. On New Year's Eve, the public will be invited to participate in the "Light of the Land" candlelight ceremony, where candles will be lit to express royal merit and loyalty. All activities will be held with a solemn and beautiful display befitting His Majesty.
