Bangkok: Talented drama producer and actress Noy Busakorn Wongpuapan recently joined attendees at the royal Khon performance ‘Satyaphali.’ She expressed her admiration for Her Majesty the Queen Mother, who serves as a significant role model in her life. Noy Busakorn shared a photo from the event and quoted the 2007 royal command, “If no one watches, Mother will watch it herself,” which was aimed at reviving and preserving the Khon tradition. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, initiated this effort, leading to royal Khon performances in various regions with her gracious support and funding for the study and development of traditional costumes and make-up.
According to Thai News Agency, His Majesty the King has been a devoted supporter of Khon performances, promoting and enhancing the tradition in multiple aspects. He ordered the assembly of expert teachers and artists to study and research the science and art underpinning Khon. His Majesty also directed the Support Foundation to create new Khon costumes, headdresses, masks, and accessories, while improving Khon makeup for modern stage performances. He further encouraged aspiring Khon performers to advance their knowledge and skills.
This royal initiative has resulted in a new generation of craftsmen, including mask makers, weavers, embroiderers, silversmiths, goldsmiths, sculptors, painters, and Khon makeup artists, all well-versed in Khon art and traditions. It has also inspired Khon experts to train young people to carry on the tradition, benefiting the Thai people and the country since 2019. The SUPPORT Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (Khon) has received royal support from His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen to preserve, develop, and expand Khon art. The SUPPORT Foundation’s Khon performance of the Ramakien: “Satya Pali” is scheduled to run from November 6 to December 8, 2025, at the Main Auditorium of the Thailand Cultural Center.
