Mae Tub Reservoir Reaches Full Capacity, Royal Irrigation Department Takes Action

Chiang mai: Mae Tub Reservoir in Chiang Mai is currently filled to its full capacity of 39 million cubic meters, prompting the Royal Irrigation Department to initiate urgent water drainage measures.

According to Thai News Agency, Mae Tub Reservoir, located in Doi Tao District, Chiang Mai Province, is the largest medium-sized reservoir in the region. The reservoir has surpassed its capacity, with water overflowing through the spillway and affecting areas downstream. Mr. Keokul Manasampanskul, Director of the Chiang Mai Irrigation Project, conducted an on-site inspection and attributed the rapidly rising water levels to the monsoon trough, which has resulted in sustained heavy rainfall in the Doi Tao area.

In anticipation of the approaching Tropical Storm Kalmaegi, expected to impact Chiang Mai province within the next 1-2 days, the department is working to quickly drain water from certain reservoirs. This effort aims to create space for the anticipated rainfall and mitigate potential impacts on residents in the lower areas. Mr. Manasampanskul confirmed that the drainage channels are functioning effectively. Additionally, in vulnerable areas like Pong Thung Subdistrict, officials have been clearing obstructions and debris, as well as coordinating with local authorities to expand small, homemade water pipes to minimize the risk of flooding. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed on the water situation and adhere to official warnings.
