Bangkok: The Cabinet has approved the establishment of four new special economic zones in Thailand, aimed at attracting renowned international universities to set up campuses in the country. This strategic move is expected to boost the higher education sector by designating these areas as hubs for high-potential foreign higher education institutions.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Cabinet meeting agreed with the proposal from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI). The approval focuses on the Northern, Northeastern, Central-Western, and Southern Special Economic Corridors, expanding the previously established Eastern Special Economic Corridor. This initiative aligns with the Cabinet's resolution on September 20, 2022, to enhance these zones as educational centers.
The Cabinet has also approved a review of the previous resolution from October 17, 2017, to update the criteria and conditions for educational management in line with current circumstances and legal frameworks. High-potential higher education institutions must now be accredited by prominent agencies such as QS or THE. Additionally, these institutions are required to submit student admissions plans with a balanced mix of Thai and international students and apply for permission to operate through the designated Subcommittee on Educational Management.
The guidelines for advancing higher education as a regional center were also acknowledged. The proposal emphasizes forming educational partnerships with Thai institutions and the private sector, thereby elevating Thailand's higher education to international recognition as a regional educational hub and destination. The Cabinet has resolved to implement these proposals from MHESI, marking a significant step towards transforming Thailand into a leading educational center in the region.
