Wan Nor Advocates “Yala Model” for Flood Management in Prone Areas

Bangkok: Wan Nor recommends that the government adopt the "Yala Model" concept in flood-affected areas, after Yala Province implemented it this year with good results.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, addressed the damage caused by the flooding in Yala Province this year, stating that the impact was minimal compared to previous years. This was partly due to the preparations of various sectors under the "Yala Model," which have been in place since the beginning of the year.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives added that this year, Yala Province has been providing constant warnings to the public, in the form of advance warnings, keeping them alert at all times. At the same time, Yala Province has prepared fully equipped shelters and prepared food supplies, allowing residents in the area to feel more comfortable evacuating their homes.

The Speaker emphasized that pre-incident surveys are essential. He noted that he had previously used a preventative approach in Udon Thani Province, which has so far suffered minimal damage from flooding. However, the government should now prepare and survey provinces prone to flooding, such as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and Ang Thong. The "Yala Model" approach could be applied, as if implemented, damage could be only half the current level.

The Speaker concluded by stating that the post-flood damage survey must be expedited and should not be delayed for more than a month, as this delay will lead to forgetting and data loss. He added that this is a crucial matter. He plans to visit Yala Province again in January to examine the "Yala Model" concept implemented this year to determine if there are any improvements needed. This will help prepare data for the situation in 2026.
