Medical Heroes of Tuyunkuan Remembered for Contributions During Chinese War Against Japan

Guiyang: During the Chinese war against Japan, Tuyunkuan stood as a pivotal location among the "Nine Gates, Four Towers and 14 Passes" of Guiyang, where the Chinese Red Cross Society's Rescue Command deployed thousands of doctors and medical personnel from around the world to provide critical aid. This operation saw significant sacrifices, with some doctors losing their lives, contributing substantially to the victory in the global fight against fascism.

According to Thai News Agency, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the International Anti-Fascist War, Yonas Muhammad, a Pakistani student at Guizhou Medical University, alongside Yang Hongmei, a descendant of a Chinese Red Cross paramedic, visited Tuyunkuan. Their journey aimed to uncover the historical contributions of medical experts who traveled great distances to join the Chinese Red Cross Headquarters in providing battlefield aid.

Further exploration into the archives of Guizhou Medical University revealed the strong cooperation between Xiahe Hospital and Guizhou, as well as the role of the Peace Village in Zhenyuan. This village not only treated physical injuries but also played a vital role in healing the psychological wounds of prisoners of war. The villagers' humane actions encouraged some prisoners to join the Allies in the war effort against Japan.

The journey undertaken by Yonas and Yang Hongmei highlighted the enduring spirit of the medical profession. Reflecting on their experiences, Yonas remarked, "When our medicine box is heavier than our ammunition box, it means humanity and we are victorious."
