Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has reported a severe escalation in tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, following an attack on a long-range weapons base and a casino building in Cambodia. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Thai soldiers and injuries to eight others.
According to Thai News Agency, Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvari addressed the situation, underlining that retaliatory actions by Thai forces are being conducted in adherence to localized incident response plans. These efforts are targeting areas identified as threats, with Cambodia reportedly preparing additional personnel and weaponry. Cambodian forces have also marked coordinates for long-range weapons, including areas near Buriram Airport and a hospital in Prasat District.
The border region has been fraught with tension, as Cambodia has frequently violated ceasefire agreements and used landmines in Thai areas, potentially aiming to impact Thai military operations. In response, the Second Army Region has coordinated with local agencies to evacuate civilians from affected areas, a task they have successfully completed.
Clashes have intensified, particularly since 5:00 a.m., with Cambodian forces deploying small arms and artillery, leading to casualties among Thai personnel in the Chong Bok area. Evidence suggests additional clashes at various locations in Surin and Sisaket provinces. The Thai response has included air support operations, with targets limited to military installations to minimize civilian harm.
The Royal Thai Air Force has been engaged to counter Cambodian artillery, aiming to mitigate the impact on Thai personnel and infrastructure. Despite the ongoing conflict, efforts are being made to ensure civilian safety, with Thai forces focusing on precision strikes against military targets.
Major General Winthai confirmed the initial death toll and injuries, noting that current operations are guided by directives from Army Commander-in-Chief General Pana Klaewplodthuk. The Thai military is on high alert, preparing to counter further threats and protect key infrastructure.
As the situation remains volatile, Major General Winthai emphasized the importance of limiting military actions to border areas to avoid international condemnation. Evacuations have been completed, and the Thai military is prepared to respond to further escalations. Monitoring continues, particularly concerning the use of BM-21 rockets, with efforts focused on minimizing civilian impact.
