Bangkok: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has expressed its heartfelt condolences and commitment to supporting the families affected by the tragic construction crane collapse onto Express Train No. 21. On January 14, 2026, the accident led to 30 fatalities and 66 injuries among the 157 passengers aboard the train.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Aviruth Thongnet, Deputy Governor of SRT, along with other executives, attended the funeral service at Wat Phai Lueang for those who lost their lives in the incident. The deceased included 29 train passengers and one employee from Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, with 29 of the fatalities identified. Of the 66 injured, 52 have been discharged from the hospital, while 14 remain hospitalized.
The SRT has announced a compensation package totaling 1,690,000 baht for the families of the deceased. This package includes 200,000 baht from the Criminal Victims and Defendants Act, 340,000 baht from SRT, and 1,150,000 baht from Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited and insurance. Initially, funeral expenses of 80,000 baht and 150,000 baht will be provided by SRT and Italian-Thai, respectively, with arrangements for the remaining compensation to follow.
For those injured in the incident, the SRT has supplied gift baskets and initial compensation. Individuals who experienced property damage or loss are encouraged to submit claims for compensation on a case-by-case basis.
In response to the accident, the SRT has temporarily altered the Ubon Ratchathani train route, opting for the Kaeng Khoi Junction - Buayai Junction - Nakhon Ratchasima route. Passengers holding tickets for travel between January 14-19, 2026, who choose not to travel, can request a refund at any train station nationwide or contact the 24-hour customer service center for assistance.
