Bangkok: Sathit Wongnongteuy, deputy leader of the Democrat Party, has criticized a prominent Facebook page for disseminating false information regarding an alleged search of a deputy leader's home, linking it to drug trafficking activities, with the intent to damage the party's reputation in Southern Thailand. He has announced plans to take legal action against those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
According to Thai News Agency, the situation arose when the Facebook page posted a message suggesting that authorities were preparing to search the home of a Democrat Party deputy leader, identified by the initials T, in connection with a drug trafficking network. This led to speculation that the individual in question was Chaichana Dechdecho, a deputy leader of the Democrat Party in Southern Thailand.
The investigation revealed that the claim lacked any factual support, stemming from a misunderstanding after police in Nakhon Si Thammarat apprehended a drug suspect with the same surname as Mr. Chaichana. The suspect, however, confirmed no connection to him. Despite this, some pages tied the news to the "10 politicians" controversy, implying a raid on the deputy leader's home, which misled the public and harmed reputations.
Chaichana's legal team is now preparing to sue those who deliberately spread the false information, noting that the act was "100% political" and aimed at weakening a party with a significant voter base in the South. This move is seen as an effort to erode its popularity in the region.
Mr. Sathit reiterated the Democrat Party's dedication to integrity in politics, stating that anyone genuinely affiliated with the party would not receive protection if involved in wrongdoing. He encouraged the public to critically evaluate news sources to avoid falling prey to false information.
