Election Commission Chairman Confirms Full Readiness for Upcoming General Election and Referendum

Bangkok: The Chairman of the Election Commission confirmed 100% readiness for the upcoming general election and referendum, expressing hope for a higher voter turnout than the previous 75%.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Narong Klanwarin, Chairman of the Election Commission, stated in an interview that the commission is fully prepared nationwide for the general election and referendum, following extensive preparations. He noted that no irregularities or violations had been detected since the morning. Mr. Narong expressed confidence in the voters' ability to correctly mark ballots, as polling stations will provide clear examples, emphasizing the necessity of using an "X" mark for both elections and the referendum. He assured that the correct marking procedures are in place, and any ballot containing a "CHECK" mark will be immediately invalidated. He also dismissed concerns about ballot tearing, reporting such incidents as rare and seldom intentional.

Mr. Narong highlighted the distribution of election materials, equipment, and ballots on February 7th, urging the Election Commission to facilitate the election process efficiently. He acknowledged the ongoing issue of vote buying and reassured that the Election Commission is actively investigating such cases. Actions will be taken against anyone found involved in these activities. Additionally, he emphasized that ballots cast for any candidate whose eligibility is revoked by the Supreme Court will be deemed invalid. Mr. Narong is optimistic about achieving a voter turnout of 80-90%, which he believes would underscore the power of the people in shaping the future of Thailand.

In response to inquiries about polling stations and absentee referendum polling units, Sub-Lieutenant Sampan Saengkhamlert, Director of the Bangkok Election Commission Office, clarified that absentee polling units for registered voters will be separate from regular polling stations.
