Betong Stream Tilapia Gains Geographical Indication Status

Bangkok: Betong flowing river tilapia has been officially registered as a Geographical Indication (GI), marking a significant achievement for Yala province. This premium tilapia, sourced from the streams of the Sankalakhiri mountain range, is renowned for its firm and bouncy flesh, naturally sweet taste, and absence of muddy or fishy odors.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce has registered Betong Flowing River Tilapia as Yala's sixth GI product. This follows the registration of other esteemed local products such as Bannang Sata Stone Banana and Yala Sadet Nam Durian. Ms. Airin emphasized that GI registration is expected to enhance product value, boost consumer trust in the origin's quality, improve market competitiveness, and increase farmer income.

The superior quality of Betong tilapia is attributed to the advantageous geographical conditions of the Sankalakhiri mountain range. This area benefits from a rich ecosystem, with cool temperatures and frequent rainfall that ensure high oxygen levels in the water. Local farmers apply traditional methods to channel stream water into their ponds, resulting in tilapia with a firm, bouncy texture, minimal fat, and a naturally sweet flavor. These qualities, combined with the fish's cleanliness and lack of muddy odor, make them ideal for dishes like sashimi.

Ms. Airin highlighted that the unique qualities of Betong flowing river tilapia have made it a preferred choice among restaurants and eateries, contributing significantly to the local economy. With an annual production volume of 163,000 kilograms and a selling price averaging 120 baht per kilogram, the tilapia generates an economic value exceeding 19 million baht for the province each year.
