Parliament Ready to Convene Following Certification of MPs

Bangkok: The Secretary-General of the Parliament is prepared to convene following the certification of Members of Parliament by the Election Commission. Mr. Siroj Paetpan, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, confirmed that the reporting process for the newly certified 499 Members of Parliament has proceeded without issues.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siroj emphasized that it is not necessary for 95% of MPs to be present for the proceedings; a sufficient number is required to proceed with the nominations to be submitted to His Majesty the King by the Prime Minister. Although the government has not directly contacted the Parliament, coordination may occur through officials to ensure a smooth process.

Mr. Siroj also addressed the timeline for the People's Party members, indicating that they have no objections to the party reporting by the final date of March 9th. However, to facilitate a proper opening ceremony, a sufficient number of members should report by March 5th or 6th.

The initial day of the session will involve an opening ceremony of Parliament and a state ceremony. Coordination with political parties, based on their member count, will follow to confirm readiness for electing the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the House. A formal summons will be issued for the swearing-in ceremony, contingent on royal approval of the Speaker. Subsequently, the government will determine the scheduling of a parliamentary session to elect the Prime Minister.

Mr. Siroj noted that over 300 members are expected to register today, including members from the Bhumjaithai Party, who have been well-prepared with the necessary documentation for a swift registration process.

Regarding the potential timeline for the election of the Speaker of the House, Mr. Siroj indicated that it could occur within this March, depending on the parties' readiness to secure a majority.
