Meteorological Department Warns Northern Thailand of Impending Summer Storms

Chiang mai: Northern Thailand is on high alert as summer storms are set to hit the region from tomorrow until May 1st. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning, predicting heavy rainfall, strong winds, lightning, and even hail in some areas, amid hot to very hot weather conditions.

According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department's announcement No. 2 (42/2569) has detailed that from April 29th to May 1st, 2026, upper Thailand will face summer storms characterized by thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and significant rainfall. The storms are expected to commence in the North, Northeast, and East regions, subsequently affecting the Central region, including Bangkok and its vicinity. This weather pattern is attributed to a high-pressure system or cold air mass originating from China that is advancing over the Northeast and the South China Sea, coinciding with the hot to very hot weather in upper Thailand.

The public, particularly in the affected areas, is urged to remain cautious of the hazards posed by these summer storms. It is advised to avoid being outdoors, staying away from large trees, unstable structures, and weak advertising signs. Farmers are encouraged to secure their fruit trees and take protective measures for their crops and livestock against potential weather-related damages. Additionally, residents should also be mindful of their health during this period of fluctuating weather conditions.
