Bangkok: The People's Party recently organized a seminar in Bangkok to address the challenges posed by stray animals and the responsibilities of pet ownership. The event sought to promote policies offering free microchipping and discounted pet insurance, aiming to mitigate the growing issue of stray dogs and cats in the city.
According to Thai News Agency, the seminar featured key speakers, including Mr. Chaiwat Sathavorawichit, a prospective candidate for Bangkok Governor, Ms. Rakchanok Srinok, a party-list MP, and Mr. Ariyathach Yodchaikiat, the prospective candidate for Bangkok Noi District Council. Dr. Korchit Suwan, a veterinarian and founder of Happy Howl - Dog Training and Behavioral, participated as a special guest speaker.
Mr. Chaiwat highlighted the cultural familiarity with stray animals in Thailand, noting that compassionate individuals often feed these animals, leading to their proliferation in urban areas. This cycle, combined with pet abandonment due to illness or financial constraints, exacerbates the stray animal problem. The People's Party proposed that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) implement pet health insurance as a mechanism to alleviate this issue.
The proposed policy includes incentives for pet owners to register their animals, offering free vaccinations, sterilization, microchipping, and insurance discounts. This initiative aims to foster better management and tracking of pet populations, akin to birth registration, allowing the BMA to provide benefits to registered pet owners.
Additionally, Mr. Chaiwat outlined plans to expand stray animal shelters, increasing their capacity to house more animals and facilitate adoptions. By making shelter animal profiles accessible, potential adopters could reserve pets and complete the adoption process with microchipping, reducing the shelter's burden.
Ms. Rakchanok observed that stray animal populations often surge in communities near temples, where abandonment is common. The People's Party's policy encourages microchipping and offers pet insurance options, making insurance more affordable and accessible through the BMA.
Dr. Korachit emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of pet abandonment and promoting responsible pet ownership. He suggested that prospective pet owners should gain experience and knowledge before adopting, potentially using AI to assess their readiness.
This comprehensive approach by the People's Party aims to tackle the stray animal epidemic in Bangkok, ensuring a healthier coexistence between humans and animals in the city.
