Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has directed the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to swiftly investigate the recent collision between a train and a bus, and to expedite compensation for the families of those who lost their lives.
According to Thai News Agency, the collision occurred on May 16, 2026, when freight train number 2126 collided with a BMTA bus on route 206 near the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection, resulting in 8 fatalities and 32 injuries. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene to monitor the situation and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He instructed relevant agencies to support the injured and expedite the identification and return of the deceased's bodies to their families. Medical units have been ordered to provide comprehensive care to prevent further loss of life, and urgent compensation is to be provided to the families of the deceased and those affected.
The Minister of Transport has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the accident by the Ministry of Transport, SRT, BMTA, and other agencies. The goal is to implement measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, along with officials from SRT and BMTA, visited the scene to coordinate with rescue units, hospitals, and police to transport the injured for medical treatment. BMTA arranged for the transfer of stranded passengers at Hua Lamphong Station. They also coordinated with insurance companies to expedite compensation for those affected, with initial compensation set at 1,500,000 baht for fatalities and up to 500,000 baht for injuries.
Mr. Siripong reiterated the Ministry's commitment to ensuring public transportation safety and the implementation of enhanced safety measures. After police forensic officers completed their investigation, the BMTA moved the accident bus to restore traffic flow.
