Bangkok: One more death has been reported following the devastating fire at the Na Lat Phrao brewery, raising the death toll to 28. Many others have been injured, with 71 individuals suffering injuries and 16 victims identified so far. Forensic investigators have discovered that a circuit breaker malfunctioned during the incident, causing it to fail to trip.
According to Thai News Agency, the fire broke out at the brewery in Lat Phrao Soi 1 at 11:57 PM. The blaze initially claimed the lives of 27 musicians and patrons, with many more injured as they were trapped inside. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control after about half an hour. The interior of the building was completely burned, leaving only charred remains. Forensic officers, along with the Phaholyothin Police Station and other relevant agencies, are currently investigating the scene to determine the exact cause, focusing on potential electrical issues.
Authorities are investigating whether negligence or arson was to blame for the fire. Police are expediting the investigation, considering both intentional acts and negligence. The shop owner is reported to be injured and receiving hospital treatment, while police prioritize assisting the injured and identifying the deceased.
Mr. Anurak Kreuachaem, Assistant Director of Chatuchak District, confirmed that the establishment had all necessary licenses. The district's last inspection in April found that the "Brewery at Ladprao" held a restaurant license, a music business license, and a building permit. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plans further inspections to ensure structural integrity and prevent future hazards.
In the aftermath, relatives of the victims are gradually arriving at the Forensic Medicine Institute to claim the bodies. The Poh Teck Tung Foundation, along with actor Tack Pharanu, is assisting with the process, providing free transportation of the deceased and offering funeral expenses. The identification of all 27 victims is underway, pending DNA comparisons with relatives.
In response to the tragedy, Police General Kittiratt Phanphet, the National Police Chief, has ordered a working group to investigate the cause of the fire. Initial inspections of the building revealed several escape routes, but confusion during the incident led many to run into restrooms rather than use available exits.
Mr. Amorn Pimanamas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, highlighted similarities with past fires, pointing out the use of flammable materials and insufficient fire safety measures. He emphasized the need for updated regulations to cover venues outside designated zoning areas.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered full compensation for the victims and their families. During a meeting with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials, the Prime Minister pledged support for addressing broader city issues and emphasized the importance of revisiting regulations concerning entertainment venues to prevent future tragedies.
