Bangkok: "Grid Modernization" is emerging as a pivotal component in Thailand's transition towards clean energy, addressing the challenges posed by the volatility of renewable energy and aiming for a Net Zero energy solution.
According to Thai News Agency, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is spearheading efforts in Grid Modernization by implementing new management systems and technologies. These include energy storage systems like hydrogen, batteries, pumped-storage hydropower plants, and electricity-to-the-grid (ESD) systems, which are poised to provide immediate supplemental power when renewable energy sources fall short.
EGAT's initiatives also feature the establishment of a Renewable Energy (REFC) forecasting center. This center is designed to predict electricity production from solar and wind power in advance, thus aiding in the planning and commissioning of power plants. Additionally, a Dry Load Control and Response Center (DRCC) has been set up to manage load reduction during peak demand periods or when fuel prices spike.
Another significant measure involves upgrading fossil fuel power plants into "Flexible Power Plants," which can rapidly adjust production capacities to compensate for fluctuations in renewable energy availability. Through these measures, EGAT aims to ensure a stable and reliable supply of electricity from clean energy sources for the people of Thailand, minimizing interruptions and enhancing energy resilience.
