Bangkok: The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security conducted a screening at Ratchadamnoen, screening 16 individuals; 2 voluntarily enrolled in a rehabilitation center. The government is moving forward with restoring the quality of life for the homeless. According to Thai News Agency, Captain Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government, through the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), is proactively assisting the homeless by focusing on reaching out to people in the community, assessing individual problems, and connecting them with appropriate assistance in areas such as health, rights and welfare, family, and employment.
Most recently, on August 7, 2026, Dr. Anekchai Ruangratanakorn, advisor to the Minister of Social Development and Human Security, along with officials from the Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSW), officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Protection and Quality of Life Enhancement Center, and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) city inspectors, visited the Ratchadamnoen Road area in Bangkok to monitor the situation and provide assistance to homeless people in the area.
During the field visit, 16 homeless individuals were found, consisting of 13 men and 3 women. Officials spoke with each individual, collected data, assessed their living conditions, physical and mental health, inquired about their problems and needs, and provided information about their rights and available welfare services.
As a result of the discussions, two men voluntarily expressed their desire to receive protection at the Bangkok Metropolitan Protection and Quality of Life Enhancement Center. This will be a follow-up step after the field visit, where officials will carefully assess their problems and needs to determine appropriate assistance for each individual.
Both individuals will undergo physical and mental health checkups, including treatment for alcohol addiction, tracing relatives, and assessing their readiness for self-sufficiency. Simultaneously, officials will coordinate with relevant agencies to provide support in vocational training, employment, and income generation, tailored to each individual's potential.
Captain Patthadarasmi stated that helping the homeless requires an individualized approach because each person's causes and problems are different. Therefore, fieldwork isn't just about removing people from public spaces, but also about understanding their specific problems and connecting them with necessary services so that solutions can be targeted.
'The cases of the two individuals who voluntarily entered the center exemplify our work, which begins with visiting their homes, engaging in conversations, and building trust, before proceeding into a systematic care process. This includes health checkups, family follow-up, and career preparation, with the goal of helping each person regain a stable life,' said the Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister.
The government and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security will continue to monitor the situation of homeless people in the field, coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure access to health services, rights and welfare, protection, family follow-up, and employment. The aim is to provide assistance that addresses individual needs and leads to tangible improvements in their quality of life.
