Bangkok: Pol. Gen. Ruddhaphol Naowarat, Minister of Justice, has affirmed that the detention of Mr. Chalong Riangrang, a former MP for Nonthaburi, is being conducted without any special privileges. Chalong, who was detained for shooting the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization chairman, is held under standard procedures at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison.
According to Thai News Agency, the Minister emphasized that the detention is in strict adherence to prison regulations. He reassured that the existing systems within the prison are sufficient to manage all inmates without bias. Moreover, he reiterated that no additional instructions were necessary for Chalong's detention as the process is a long-established routine.
In addressing the issue of firearm regulations, Pol. Gen. Ruddhaphol mentioned the recent measure by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, which restricts officers from carrying firearms. He clarified that within the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), officers are allowed to carry firearms only with a valid permit and when on duty. Permission from the Director-General is required for both official and personal firearms.
The Minister also shared his personal stance on firearm possession, stating that as a former police officer, he owns a firearm but keeps it at home for property protection. He holds a gun permit but does not carry a firearm while off duty. Furthermore, he noted that the Prime Minister has mandated random checks on security personnel to ensure compliance with regulations.
