Bangkok: The new Election Commission (EC) has overturned a previous decision from the 'Ittiporn' era, permitting Saeng Boonmee to continue as Secretary-General until 2027. The commission voted 5 to 2 in favor of Saeng Boonmee, allowing him to remain in his role until March 2027.
According to Thai News Agency, the Election Commission held a closed-door meeting to review the performance evaluation of Mr. Saeng Boonmee for the fiscal year 2025. The commission's decision, with a 5 to 2 vote, allows Mr. Boonmee to continue as Secretary-General until the end of his contract on March 31, 2027. This evaluation follows the current EC's decision to overturn the initial evaluation conducted by the previous EC, led by Mr. Ittiporn Boonprakong, which had rated Mr. Boonmee below 60%. Had the earlier decision been upheld, Mr. Boonmee would have been removed from his position.
The current EC argued that the employment contract stipulates that existing EC members are responsible for the evaluation. Additionally, past EC members who have left office have not conducted such evaluations. As a result, the current EC resolved on July 15th to annul the evaluation results of the previous EC chaired by Mr. Itthiporn. Consequently, the current EC decided to conduct its own evaluation of Mr. Saeng's performance. Today, they convened and voted to approve the evaluation, securing Mr. Boonmee's tenure until 2027.
