Thailand-South Korea “Sensory Experiences” Exhibition Promotes Contemporary Art Through Handicrafts

Bangkok: The National Culture Commission of Thailand (NCCT) collaborates with South Korea to present the "Sensory Experiences" exhibition, promoting the learning of contemporary art through handicrafts. This initiative aims to foster bilateral relations and is open to the public free of charge from August 18 to September 15 at the Ratchadamnoen Central Contemporary Art Gallery in Bangkok.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ketsara Kamnoedpetch, Director of the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC), represented the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture at the exhibition's opening ceremony. The event was attended by notable figures including Mr. Park Yong-min, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Thailand, and Mr. Byun Kwang-seop, CEO of the Cheongju Cultural Industry Foundation. The collaboration between OCAC and the Cheongju Craft Biennale organizing committee aims to use handicrafts as a medium for disseminating contemporary art knowledge and sensory experiences.

Ms. Ketsara highlighted that the exhibition, "Shared Sensibilities," serves as a platform for Thailand and South Korea to showcase their rich heritage in handicrafts. These crafts combine traditional craftsmanship with local and global creativity, representing cultural identity and offering a space for experimentation and expression. The exhibition features over 70 contemporary handicraft works by Thai and Korean artists, covering a range of materials including weaving, ceramics, wood, and metalwork.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: "Threads of Memory," which uses traditional craft materials and techniques to explore Thai and South Korean cultural heritage; "The Thinking Hand," which demonstrates how crafts serve as a medium for thought through repetition and failure; and a third part that illustrates contemporary sensory experiences and social awareness through crafts. Open daily except Mondays and public holidays from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, the exhibition is part of a broader effort to enhance cooperation between Thailand and Korea.

The initiative is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting contemporary arts and culture between the two countries from 2025 to 2026. The collaboration seeks to strengthen international cooperation and showcase Thai arts and culture on a global platform.
