Bangkok: The Thai government has announced an innovative recruitment initiative for its 70th annual "Volunteer Soldier" program, offering young men a pathway to a military career with flexible enlistment options and unit choices across the nation. This new model aims to streamline the recruitment process and provide recruits with opportunities for advancement within the military.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that the government is encouraging Thai men aged 18-26 to apply for compulsory military service as "volunteer soldiers" starting in 2027. Applications can be submitted online or in person at any of the 221 designated Army units or military recruitment offices from September 10, 2026, to January 24, 2027. The program is set to recruit 18,784 personnel, aligning with government and Ministry of Defence policies.
Ms. Ploytalee further explained that "volunteer soldiers" would serve under a 4-year contract, receiving training and performing duties akin to regular soldiers. The program offers various benefits, including a starting salary of 12,090 baht per month, along with a special allowance for food or catering. Volunteers who serve for two years or more are eligible to apply for the Army Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) program, with preferential quotas and bonus points in the recruitment exam, enhancing their career prospects.
The government emphasizes that this initiative is not only a chance to serve the nation but also an opportunity for career advancement within the military. Ms. Ploytale highlighted the comprehensive support and improved welfare benefits available to recruits, which are designed to be relevant to the current environment, encouraging Thai men from all educational backgrounds to consider this career path.
