Bangkok: Heavy rain is forecasted to lash Southern Thailand and Bangkok, raising concerns about potential flash flooding in the region. Additionally, a new storm is advancing towards Vietnam, anticipated to make its presence felt between September 13-14.
According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department has issued announcement No. 9, which highlights the heavy to very heavy rainfall expected to impact Thailand until September 13, 2026. From September 11-13, 2026, the southern region has seen a significant increase in rainfall, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy downpours. The lower central region, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas, along with the eastern region, also reported substantial rainfall in certain locations. Conversely, a decline in rainfall was observed in the northern and northeastern parts of the country.
The changing weather patterns are attributed to a high-pressure area or cold air mass from southern China, which is moving over northern and upper northeastern Thailand. This shift is causing the monsoon trough to migrate southward, crossing lower central Thailand, upper southern Thailand, the upper Gulf of Thailand, and eastern Thailand into a strong low-pressure area in the central South China Sea. Additionally, the southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is expected to strengthen.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant against the dangers posed by heavy to very heavy rainfall and the accumulation of rainwater, which could lead to flash floods and landslides. Areas on slopes close to waterways and low-lying regions are particularly at risk, and caution is advised against traveling on flood-prone routes, especially in low-lying areas susceptible to short-term flooding. Furthermore, the strong low-pressure system in the central South China Sea is predicted to intensify into a tropical cyclone, potentially moving closer to Vietnam's northern coast by September 13-14, 2026.
