Kamphaeng Phet:Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, visited Kamphaeng Phet Rajabhat University to advocate for the role of universities as catalysts for sustainable local development through innovation.
According to Thai News Agency, Professor Dr. Yotsanun delivered a lecture emphasizing the need for universities to transform into think tanks that leverage local resources and cultural assets, such as the province's GI-certified bananas, to enhance economic development. He highlighted the importance of integrating innovation into local agriculture, aiming to convert produce into income efficiently.
Professor Dr. Yotsanun discussed the use of research from the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research to reduce agricultural costs and increase productivity. He specifically mentioned innovations like custom-made fertilizers that blend chemical and organic components to lower expenses and improve soil health. Additionally, an innovative dwarf banana variety is being developed to withstand adverse weather conditions.
Efforts are also underway to combat cassava mosaic disease by producing disease-free planting materials, which are expected to boost yields by over 80% within a year. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to transform Kamphaeng Phet into a "Sandbox" for agricultural and economic advancement.
Addressing poverty eradication, Professor Dr. Yotsanun explained that Rajabhat Universities aim to transform into resources accessible to the public, identifying vulnerable groups and providing them with necessary skills and land for communal farming. This approach is designed to lift people out of poverty by enhancing their vocational skills and ensuring they benefit from government support.
The visit also included a tour of research projects at the university, such as the creation of natural fabric dyes from banana plant waste. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between TISTR and the Liquor Organization to promote the production of ethanol and local spirits, further contributing to local economic growth.
Professor Dr. Yotsanun and his team are scheduled to inspect local infrastructure projects and engage with the community in the Sai Ngam District.
