Prime Minister Orders Swift Action to Clear Debris in Flood-Affected Phuket

Phuket:The Prime Minister has directed immediate action to clear rocks and mud in Phuket after recent flooding. Although the floodwaters have receded, officials have been advised to stay alert as more rainfall is anticipated.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as Minister of Interior, has ordered Phuket province to deploy machinery urgently to remove debris and mud left by flash floods. The flooding, caused by continuous rainfall from October 25 through October 26, resulted from poor drainage systems. Flash floods stemming from a nearby 50-year-old mountain brought rocks, mud, and soil into roads and homes.

Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, reported that by 800 AM, standing water had dissipated, leaving behind mud and debris. Efforts are underway to clear the affected areas, with government agencies continuing to provide assistance and monitor the situation. The public is advised to remain vigilant, secure their belongings, and heed warnings about potential heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides.

Patong Municipality has established a public assistance center and shelters for those displaced by the flooding. Locations providing services include Patong Municipality, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong School, and Patong Bay Hill Hotel. A 24-hour emergency contact has been set up at 0 7634 2600 for those in need.

Ms. Ploytalay added that damage assessments are being expedited for compensation distribution per government regulations. Residents requiring additional aid can reach out to local officials or call the hotline at 1784 for support.
