Stroke Awareness Highlighted on World Stroke Day

Bangkok:World Stroke Day served as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and responding swiftly to stroke symptoms. Medical professionals emphasize the need for immediate medical intervention within 4.5 hours of symptom onset to mitigate the risk of disability or death.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Veerawut Im-Samran, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, highlighted stroke as a significant public health concern in Thailand and globally. He noted that stroke is the leading cause of death in Thailand and the second leading cause of lost healthy life years, affecting both men and women. Residual disabilities from strokes significantly impact patients' lives and the economy.

The importance of prevention was underscored, with emphasis on understanding risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, age, smoking, lack of exercise, obesity, and arrhythmia. Key symptoms include sudden weakness on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, and vision problems. Prompt hospital visits within 4.5 hours are crucial, as symptoms can suddenly appear or precede a permanent stroke.

Dr. Im-Samran explained that timely medical intervention, including thrombolytic drugs and intravascular coagulation treatment, can reduce mortality and disability. The Institute of Neurology organized educational activities, screenings, and expert discussions to raise awareness about stroke prevention and treatment, particularly for individuals over 50, during an event held on October 29, 2026.
