Bangkok:Academics in Thailand are advising the government to exercise caution in its dealings with the United States, particularly concerning President Donald Trump's tactics and policies.
According to Thai News Agency, Assistant Professor Dr. Wibulphong Poonprasit from the Faculty of Political Science at Thammasat University, who also serves as an advisor to the American Studies Association in Thailand, highlighted the need for Thailand to navigate the US political landscape carefully. Speaking on the "Sharing the News" program on MCOT NEWS FM 100.5, Dr. Wibulphong emphasized that Thailand should avoid entangling itself in Trump's political issues or foreign policies unless absolutely necessary.
Dr. Wibulphong pointed out that the Trump administration prioritizes U.S. interests, which poses challenges for Thailand in negotiations or agreements due to the U.S.'s superior bargaining power. He noted that Trump's policies do not align with the rules Thailand expects from the United States, making diplomatic negotiations difficult. The Thai government is advised to weigh the pros and cons of any engagements with the U.S. carefully.
The Thai government is also encouraged to pay attention to the results of the US midterm elections, as a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives could increase opposition to Trump's legislative agenda. This political shift, even if the Republicans maintain control of the Senate, could influence US policy and impact Thailand's diplomatic strategy.
Overall, the recommendation for Thailand is to avoid unnecessary political entanglements, monitor developments in US politics closely, and prioritize the protection of Thailand's interests while considering cooperation that benefits both nations.
