Bangkok:The On Nut landfill, once synonymous with towering heaps of garbage and persistent odors, is undergoing a significant transformation. Located in the Prawet District, this waste disposal center is being reimagined as a sprawling green space as part of the Green Eco Park (GEP) initiative, spearheaded by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
According to Thai News Agency, the project aims to convert over 580 rai of landfill land into a vibrant urban forest. As part of this effort, more than 48,000 trees have already been planted, fostering a new ecosystem that has attracted birds and small animals back to the area. Future plans include developing the site into a public park with running trails, offering citizens a rejuvenated space for recreation and relaxation.
In addition to the greening efforts, the BMA is tackling the area's odor issues by implementing an e-Nose (Electronic Nose) system. This technology monitors odors in real-time, with the data available online for public access, enhancing transparency in environmental management. There are also plans to phase out the old composting plant, a major source of the odor, paving the way for further green development.
The Green Eco Park initiative represents a shift in Bangkok's waste management strategy from mere disposal to comprehensive area restoration and community quality of life improvement. If successful, it could serve as a model for future urban waste management and green space projects in major cities.
