Lightning Strikes Raise Concerns Over Safety Measures on Sports Fields

Chachoengsao:Recent incidents of lightning strikes on sports fields have raised significant safety concerns, especially following the tragic death of a young golfer in Chachoengsao province. This incident has sparked a public dialogue on the need for increased awareness and prevention measures against such natural hazards.

According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Jessada Denduangboriphant highlighted negligence and complacency as major factors contributing to such incidents. Despite visible signs of danger, such as dark clouds and thunder, activities often continue on fields like golf courses, which are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes. Dr. Jessada emphasized that while some standard courses are equipped with electric field monitors to detect electrical charges and halt activities, many lack these safety measures, leading to risky decisions by organizers.

Survival strategies and first aid are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with lightning strikes. It is essential for parents and athletes to be proactive in halting activities at the first sign of danger without waiting for official instructions. In the presence of thunder or lightning, seeking shelter under a sturdy roof is advised, avoiding trees or arches which can attract lightning. If unable to reach safety, lowering one's posture with minimal ground contact can reduce risk. In emergencies, performing CPR immediately is vital, as rapid chest compressions can be life-saving, with no concern of residual electricity from the strike.

This incident serves as a critical reminder for authorities to enforce and standardize safety protocols, emphasizing that no competition is worth risking a life. The public is urged to recognize the severity of natural disasters and take preventive actions to avoid future tragedies.
