Thailand to Propose Loy Krathong Tradition for UNESCO Heritage Status

Bangkok: The government is preparing to propose the 'Loy Krathong tradition' as a world heritage. The government is set to propose to UNESCO the registration of the "Loy Krathong tradition" as an intangible cultural heritage.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, deputy government spokesman, announced the results of the cabinet meeting, revealing that the Ministry of Culture had submitted documentation on the Loi Krathong tradition in Thailand. This submission is aimed at securing its place on UNESCO's representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Thailand has previously succeeded in registering various cultural elements, such as Khon and Thai massage in 2018 and 2019, Nora in 2021, Songkran in 2023, and Tom Yum Goong in 2024. Currently, Thai dress and Muay Thai are under consideration by UNESCO.

Mr. Anukul explained that the Committee for the Promotion and Conservation of Cultural Heritage resolved to propose the Loi Krathong tradition of Thailand for UNESCO's consideration. The proposal is aligned with UNESCO's criteria and is anticipated to bring numerous benefits to Thailand. These include global recognition and the promotion of religious and environmental values, emphasizing gratitude to rivers and nature. Additionally, the tradition highlights the importance of conserving the environment and traditions, while also supporting the development of the local economy through the production and distribution of local products related to the Loi Krathong tradition.
