Government Cracks Down on “Art Toy” Drug Use During Songkran, Highlighting Severe Risks

Bangkok: The government has launched a crackdown on both dealers and users of the drug known as "Art Toys," following reports of its widespread usage during the Songkran festival. The substance is deemed dangerous, with potential life-threatening consequences. Those involved in the importation, distribution, possession, or use of the drug face stringent penalties including imprisonment and heavy fines. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, the Deputy Government Spokesperson, disclosed that drug trafficking organizations are continuously devising new techniques to smuggle narcotics into the country. These groups frequently evade detection by altering their methods. Recently, it has been discovered that drugs are being manufactured in the form of cartoon characters, known as 'Art Toy La Boo Boo,' which gained popularity among tourists during the Songkran celebrations. The government issued a cautionary note to teenagers and tourists who indulge in drug use for recreation, warning that these substances contain depressants that amplify effects, especially when mixed with alcohol. This combination can lead to severe consequences such as respiratory depression, heart failure, and even death. During the recent Songkran Festival, there were reported cases of two fatalities and one individual admitted to the ICU as a result of consuming Art Toy La Boo Boo. In addition to posing significant health risks, drug use remains illegal under Thai legislation. Offenses related to Category 1 narcotics, such as production, importation, exportation, sale, or possession without authorization, carry penalties of up to 15 years in prison and fines up to 1.5 million baht. Simple possession of Category 1 narcotics can result in up to 2 years' imprisonment or a fine of up to 40,000 baht, while usage incurs penalties of up to 1 year in prison or a fine of up to 20,000 baht. Mr. Anukul emphasized the government's commitment to tackling the drug issue, which has pervasive impacts on society including health, economy, secu rity, and the development of youth and families. A systematic approach to resolving the drug problem is deemed essential for fostering a safe and stable society. The public is urged to stay informed, assist in monitoring, and report any suspicious activities, particularly during festivals when tourists and revelers gather. Suspicious activities can be reported to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau hotline at 1386. The government has directed relevant agencies to take immediate action to prevent, suppress, and enforce strict arrests in relation to drug activities.
