Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra emphasized the importance of patience and careful consideration in the ongoing negotiations regarding the US tariff wall. He remarked on the necessity of understanding both American and Thai concerns, which have long been overlooked, and highlighted the need to focus more on the quality rather than just the volume of imports and exports.
According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin expressed that the situation serves as a crucial wake-up call for Thailand to address trade imbalances and adjust strategies to create a more equitable trading environment. He noted that the US's delay in engaging in negotiations with Thailand is due to its broader strategic objectives in Asia, particularly concerning its relationship with China. Therefore, the negotiations involve not only tariff issues but also non-tariff matters, requiring a patient and informed approach.
Thaksin also mentioned discussions with individuals close to President Trump, although he stressed that any negotiations would rely on a mix of information from various agencies, including security concerns and legal matters involving Americans. He stated that whether he would seek court permission to personally negotiate with President Trump would depend on the evolving circumstances.
Thaksin further clarified that typically, prime ministers do not engage directly in these negotiations, which are usually conducted with the United States Trade Representative or the Ministry of Commerce, thus necessitating negotiations at the ministerial level.
