Chiang Rai: 'Phumtham' confirms that military units immediately went to the Mae Sai flood relief area when the incident occurred. As for the solution, all affected and participating countries must see the same problem and it cannot be resolved in a single discussion.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, discussed the operation of the military unit assisting people affected by the river overflow that flooded houses in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province today. He stated that the 37th Military Circle and agencies responsible for disaster prevention and relief are actively engaged in the area. These agencies are well-acquainted with the region and have previously addressed similar issues. The military considers disaster response a core mission and duty, allowing them to act promptly without awaiting orders. The government supports these efforts, including the disbursement of necessary expenses, and confirms that military personnel are already providing assistance on site.
Addressing long-term solutions, Mr. Phumtham mentioned that the Cabinet approved a budget exceeding 300 million baht for the Army Development Unit of the Royal Thai Army Headquarters to address issues in the Ping and Kok rivers. He acknowledged that resolving these problems is a complex challenge that cannot be completed in 1-2 years due to external factors and the unpredictable nature of natural disasters. The government is committed to adapting personnel and resources to handle such challenges effectively and is working towards an integrated, comprehensive plan for sustainable solutions.
Regarding international cooperation, Mr. Phumtham emphasized the importance of discussions with countries like China and Myanmar through platforms such as the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) meeting. He pointed out that while there are ongoing discussions among Mekong River Basin countries, resolving issues requires a shared understanding and respect for each country's sovereignty. The process of international dialogue and cooperation will take time to develop effective, long-lasting solutions.
