Relaxation on Alcohol Sales in Designated Areas During Religious Holidays Announced

Bangkok: A significant update has been announced regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages in Thailand, as the government has decided to relax restrictions in specific areas during important religious holidays. This decision was revealed by Mr. Jirayu Huangtrakul, spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, following a meeting of the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Mr. Prasert Chantarawongthong.

According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Gazette will announce a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages on five important religious days, with exceptions in certain areas. The approved locations where alcohol sales are permitted include hotels, international airports, service establishments, business districts, and areas promoting tourism activities, effective from May 10, 2025. This move aims to support Thailand's tourism industry, marking the year 2025 as the year of Thai tourism.

The announcement specifies that sales will be allowed in places such as international airports, service establishments, tourist areas, hotels, and venues hosting significant national or international events, as determined by the Minister of Public Health and the Minister of Tourism and Sports. Sellers in these areas are required to implement measures to ensure public safety and order, particularly in preventing access to alcohol by minors.

Mr. Jirayu emphasized that this policy aligns with the government's initiative to promote 2025 as the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports year. It is expected to benefit tourism entrepreneurs by facilitating activities throughout the year, while also considering societal peace and safety. The policy reflects the findings of relevant agencies that studied the feasibility and appropriateness of relaxing these restrictions.

The new regulation will take effect following its publication in the Royal Gazette on May 9, 2025, and will replace the previous announcement prohibiting alcohol sales on specified religious days. This change will be in place before Visakha Bucha Day on May 11, 2025, allowing for the designated exceptions to be observed.
