Bangkok: The 'Preserving Muay Thai from the Grassroots to the World' AUTHENTIC MUAYTHAI competition, now in its third season, aims to nurture local talent and elevate them to professional levels, according to a recent press conference presided over by Mr. Surawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports. The event took place at Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium and included notable figures such as Mr. Tanukiat Janchum, Manager of the National Sports Development Fund, and Mr. Somchat Charoenwatcharawit, President of the Professional Boxing Association of Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, the Professional Boxing Association of Thailand has been tasked by the Sports Authority of Thailand to manage this project for the fiscal year 2024. The initiative is designed to develop Muay Thai boxers from grassroots levels, offering youth and new-generation fighters a platform to enter professional competitions. The project's goals extend beyond the ring, aiming to position Muay Thai as a 'soft power' for Thailand while simultaneously boosting the community economy through sports and culture.
Mr. Surawong Thienthong emphasized the government's focus on promoting Muay Thai as a key cultural and economic asset. He noted that grassroots promotion would ensure the sport's sustainability while preserving its cultural significance. Muay Thai has the potential to enhance Thailand's economy, tourism, and global reputation.
Mr. Tanukiat Chanchum highlighted the project's intent to foster Muay Thai's growth at the local level, aiming for international recognition. The initiative not only looks to create athletes but also to build opportunities and a robust ecosystem for Muay Thai from the community to the global stage.
Mr. Somchat Charoenwachirawit reiterated the association's commitment to providing opportunities for young people across Thailand in 2025. The project invites new boxers nationwide, promoting equal opportunity regardless of previous experience or affiliations.
The competition, scheduled from April 10 to May 9, 2025, is structured in three rounds across 16 clusters nationwide, culminating in regional and national finals. The competition will run from May 31 to December 20, 2025, with live broadcasts and highlights available on the Muay Thai Rak Ya social media channels.
