Bangkok: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, addressed recent political developments, emphasizing that the current cabinet reshuffle does not signal a change in the prime minister. He assured that the coalition parties remain intact and committed to the current leadership.
According to Thai News Agency, the Phalang Pracharath Party has no intentions of replacing the prime minister. He also acknowledged the public's right to rally for political changes, urging adherence to legal procedures and highlighting the importance of addressing external threats to national security.
Mr. Phumtham stated in an interview that discussions with coalition parties confirmed the Prime Minister's leadership position. He clarified that the government has not resigned, nor has it been dissolved, indicating that the notion of appointing a new leader is unfounded. The reshuffling of the cabinet is merely a strategic adjustment, and the coalition parties continue to function effectively despite the Bhumjaithai Party's departure.
When questioned about the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party's alleged proposal to appoint Chaikasem Nitisiri as the new prime minister, Mr. Phumtham dismissed the rumor, indicating no such signals have been received by the Pheu Thai Party or the Prime Minister. He reassured that all coalition parties continue to support the current prime minister.
Mr. Phumtham expressed confidence in the coalition's stability and mentioned that any additional support for the government would be evaluated through official processes. He also addressed rumors of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party using its stance as a bargaining tool, suggesting that intra-party discussions are standard in politics and do not necessarily imply instability.
Regarding the government's continuation amidst calls for its resignation, Mr. Phumtham reported that dialogues between involved parties and the prime minister have resolved any misunderstandings. He described the situation as diplomatic negotiations devoid of charges or issues, emphasizing the importance of national sovereignty.
In response to ongoing public demonstrations, Mr. Phumtham advocated for lawful expression of opinions, projecting that any dissatisfaction within the country could diminish with time. He underscored the priority of addressing external security threats that could destabilize the government.
When asked about restoring public confidence in the Prime Minister, Mr. Phumtham suggested that time and government actions would demonstrate the Prime Minister's dedication. He attributed recent tensions to misinterpretations, stressing the significance of focusing on external factors attempting to undermine domestic stability.
Lastly, when questioned about relations with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, Mr. Phumtham affirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is handling the matter in accordance with international standards, ensuring no deviation from established foreign policy principles.
