Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, has issued a stern warning to political parties about the dangers of manipulating the Senate and independent organizations to cover up executive misconduct, equating such actions to using freedom of speech as a means to overthrow the government. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Abhisit, who is also a member of the House of Representatives' Committee on Judicial Affairs and related organizations, presided over a seminar on "Crisis of Confidence in Independent Organizations: Origins and Solutions" at the Rama Gardens Hotel. In his address, he highlighted the historical and ongoing issues surrounding accountability within Thai democracy, emphasizing that the root of the problem lies in the lack of accountability among politicians. Mr. Abhisit pointed out that Thailand's adoption of a parliamentary system did not adequately incorporate the political traditions and culture of accountability seen in other parliamentary democracies like Japan, the UK, and Australia. He noted that while these countries do not require independent organizations due to robust internal accountability mechanisms, Thailand's system has struggled with political interference. Reflecting on past attempts to address these issues, Mr. Abhisit recounted efforts to amend the constitution to strengthen independent oversight, such as the establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). However, he lamented the ongoing challenges, including political interference in independent organizations, facilitated by the directly elected Senate and subsequent constitutional amendments. Mr. Abhisit criticized the current constitution for exacerbating these problems by enabling coup leaders to influence independent organizations and the Senate. He warned that if political parties continue to manipulate these bodies, it could undermine democratic accountability. To restore public trust, Mr. Abhisit proposed potential solutions, including constitutional amendments to address the origins o f independent organizations and the Senate, as well as mechanisms to enhance transparency and accountability. He emphasized the need for a network of independent organizations to oversee political power until political parties can demonstrate self-regulation. In conclusion, Mr. Abhisit cautioned against complacency, urging vigilance to prevent political parties from seizing control of the Senate and independent organizations, which could result in unchecked executive power. He stressed that true democracy requires accountability to the people, not just elections.
