Mukdahan: The Department of Disease Control has confirmed two cases of anthrax, including one death, in Mukdahan province. A total of 638 individuals have been identified as high-risk contacts.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Weerawat Manosutthi, a senior doctor and spokesman for the Department of Disease Control, provided an update on the situation last evening. He confirmed that the two patients are from the Don Tan sub-district, Don Tan district. The first patient, a 53-year-old man, developed symptoms after butchering an animal on April 8. His condition worsened due to pre-existing diabetes and high blood sugar, leading to his death on April 30.
The second patient, also a 53-year-old man, was involved in the same animal dissection and presented with similar blisters on his hands. He is currently receiving treatment to prevent the spread of the infection, and his condition is being closely monitored by medical professionals.
For those identified as high-risk, a medical team will administer a 7-day course of antibiotics. The public has been advised to exercise caution but not to panic, as anthrax is primarily transmitted from animals to humans, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
