Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has declared his readiness to confront allegations of collusion in the selection of senators, following a summons by the Election Commission (EC). Anutin, along with Newin Chidchob and other members of the party's executive committee, has been called to explain his involvement in the case, which accuses him of attempting to undermine democracy within the selection process of senators.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin confirmed that he received the summons at his residence in Buriram Province last week. Although he could not recall the exact date, he expressed his willingness to clarify the situation, emphasizing his belief in his innocence. He indicated that his legal team is handling the matter due to the complexity of the legal issues involved. Anutin reassured that all actions would be in accordance with the law, asserting that these allegations must be substantiated through due process.
When questioned about Newin Chidchob's involvement, Anutin noted that the focus of the investigation appears to be on the executive committee of the Bhumjaithai Party. He emphasized the importance of following legal procedures to determine the veracity of the allegations. Addressing speculation that the summons might be politically motivated, Anutin dismissed such claims, reiterating his confidence that legal compliance will prove their innocence.
Anutin also addressed rumors linking the summons to political maneuvers regarding the Interior Ministry. He maintained that there is no legal issue to be concerned about, as all actions have been lawful. He emphasized the importance of preparing to address accusations, while also acknowledging the need to accept responsibility if any wrongdoing is proven.
In response to questions about potential meetings with the Prime Minister at Thai Khu Fah Building, Anutin confirmed that an appointment is being arranged. However, he refrained from disclosing whether the discussions would involve a cabinet reshuffle. He clarified that the current allegations are not formal charges but rather a notification to acknowledge the situation, and any response will be guided by legal advice.
Addressing the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle, Anutin pointed out that such matters are not solely within the Prime Minister's discretion but require discussions among party leaders. He downplayed reports suggesting an imminent party meeting to address reshuffle concerns, explaining that the meeting agenda is focused on the upcoming House of Representatives session and budget discussions.
Anutin reiterated that any changes in cabinet positions should be the result of discussions among party leaders, rather than direct decisions by the Prime Minister. He affirmed that he stands by his statements and remains committed to addressing the situation through appropriate legal channels.
