Anutin Charnvirakul Stands Firm on Gun License Non-Renewal Policy

Bangkok: "Anutin" reveals that he has never approved a gun license renewal. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has disclosed that during his nearly two-year tenure, he has consistently refrained from approving gun license renewals. Despite facing persistent pressure, he maintains that these licenses should remain inactive, restricting individuals from carrying firearms outside their homes.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed the issue of gun licenses in light of a recent shooting incident in Tak Province. He asserted that since he assumed the role of Minister of Interior, the ministry has not issued any new gun licenses. This policy has been in effect since Mr. Arsit Sampantharat, then Permanent Secretary of Interior, served as Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration. Anutin further instructed all governors and district chiefs across the country to halt the issuance of gun licenses.

Discussing the renewal process for existing licenses, Anutin clarified that licenses are valid for one year and require renewal upon expiration. However, he has upheld a strict policy against renewing any gun licenses since taking office. Anutin emphasized his commitment to preventing illegal gun use and ensuring that authorities take stringent action against offenders. He noted that the policy is not specifically aimed at individuals with mental health issues but insisted that safety precautions must be observed in such cases.

Anutin reiterated his stance that without license renewal, firearms must remain at home and cannot be transported elsewhere. He acknowledged the ongoing pressure to change this policy but expressed confidence that maintaining the non-renewal policy is the correct course of action.
