Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, announced plans to reduce the disaster situation level from Level 3 to Level 2, transferring authority to provincial governors for more flexible management.
According to Thai News Agency, this decision aims to empower local governance in handling the aftermath of the recent earthquake that has affected various regions.
The Comptroller General's Department has sanctioned a budget of 200 million baht for the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. This fund is intended to support disaster victims in Bangkok and 76 other provinces, focusing primarily on assisting with living expenses and work in affected areas. Anutin, who is also the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Commander, emphasized the critical nature of the response, particularly concerning the collapse of the State Audit Office building.
Efforts to locate and rescue survivors trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building are ongoing, with the first 72 hours post-incident deemed crucial. Authorities are urged to proceed cautiously to prevent further collapse while ensuring the safety of both survivors and rescuers. The careful removal of debris and measured use of heavy machinery are paramount to preserve lives and ensure safety.
Anutin directed officials to clear the work area thoroughly to confirm that no one remains trapped. While a list of missing persons has been compiled, detailed inspections continue to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
Elsewhere in the country, Anutin noted that the situation remains manageable, with aftershock occurrences on the decline. By delegating authority to provincial governors, the government aims to enable more effective and responsive management of local situations, enhancing the overall disaster response strategy.
